How mobile speed camera vans work

Mobile safety camera vans are run by local safety camera partnerships (police and councils working together). They park at approved enforcement sites and measure passing vehicles with a type-approved laser or radar device, recording video as evidence.

Sites are normally chosen because of a history of collisions or repeated complaints about speeding. Many are stretches of road up to a couple of kilometres long, so the van will not always be in exactly the same spot. Vans are usually liveried in high-visibility markings.

If you are caught, the registered keeper should receive a Notice of Intended Prosecution within 14 days. Depending on your speed you may be offered a speed awareness course, a £100 fixed penalty with 3 points, or a court summons — try the fine calculator.

Where are the mobile speed cameras this week?

A few safety camera partnerships publish where their vans will be in advance — Safer Roads Humber publishes a daily schedule and CREST Derbyshire a monthly list. Most others publish the full list of approved mobile enforcement sites instead. This page collects both and is checked every week.

Can a mobile speed camera van be anywhere?

Camera vans operated by safety camera partnerships work from approved sites, usually chosen because of collision history or community concern, and most sites cover a stretch of road rather than a single spot. Police officers with handheld devices can also enforce elsewhere, so always drive to the posted limit.

How accurate are mobile speed cameras?

Mobile units use Home Office type-approved laser or radar devices that are calibrated regularly. Most forces follow the NPCC guidance of enforcing from the limit plus 10% plus 2 mph, but that is discretionary — any speed over the limit is an offence.

Will I get a ticket from a camera van?
